Program Overview

Through the integration of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), our college-career readiness courses will give students the space to develop and apply their unique gifts, talents, and abilities.
 
The Nightingale Gifted/Highly Gifted STEM Magnet seeks the next generation of greatest thinkers to use STEM to engineer new worlds that identify and respond to the evolving needs of humanity. 
 

Gifted STEM Magnet Courses

6th Grade
Includes, but is not limited to, the following units:
 
  • Introduction to Computer Science in Scratch
  • Canva as a Digital Tool
  • Introduction to LEGO Robotics
  • Introduction to 3D Modeling & 3D Printing
 
7th Grade
Includes, but is not limited to, the following units:
 
  • Intermediate LEGO Robotics
  • Introduction to Physical Computing with Arduino
  • Art, Animation, and Games in Python
  • Intermediate 3D Modeling & Printing
 
8th Grade
Includes, but is not limited to, the following units:
 
  • Advanced Animations and Games in Python
  • Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning
  • Advanced LEGO Robotics
 
Competitions
Students in the STEM Magnet also compete in regional and national tournaments Some of these include:
 
 
STEM Magnet will also compete in the Congressional App Challenge, Vex IQ competitions, and others. All of these opportunities provide students with the opportunity to collaborate with peers; design, build, and test innovative solutions; apply learned skills and concepts to real world problems; and, build resilience as students persevere to overcome obstacles.
 
 
As a PLTW school, students will have fun with the following units:
 
Intro to Computer Science (ICS)
 
  • Coding, creating apps for mobile devices
  • Explore impact of computing in society; how it applies in various career fields

Design & Modeling

  • Students apply the design process to solve problems, understand the influence of creativity and innovation in their lives
  • Autodesk design software to create a visual image of designs and produce a portfolio to showcase innovative solutions

Automation & Robotics

  • History, development, and influence of automation & robotics
  • Mechanical systems, energy transfer, machine automation & computer control systems
  • VEX Robotics platform to design, build, and program real-world objects such as robotic arms
