2021-2022 LAUSD East VEX IQ League Meet

Three Gifted STEM Magnet teams excelled at the LAUSD East Vex IQ league meet. Not only did two of our teams participate in matches where the two highest scores were produced, but they ended the event ranked #3, #5, and #6 out of 36 teams. The idea of the game is to knock down as many orange disks as possible from the dispensers and then to shoot them onto the other side of the field. Two of our three teams have shooter mechanisms; they are the only teams in the LAUSD East league to have them.

2020-2021 1st Place USC go IT

Gifted STEM Magnet won first place in the USC/goIT competition. STEM students, Jonathan Martinez, Jonathan Nguyen, and Mark Luong presented, “The Clean Stream,” to a panel of experts. The Clean Stream is a low-cost water-purifying system operated by a microprocessor called Microbit. The students successfully defined a problem and demonstrated the utilization of their prototype to win the event.

The mission of the USC/goIT program is to engaged students in solving problems through technology and creativity. The event was held in conjunction with National CS Week and as part of Nightingale’s partnership with the USC Viterbi School of Engineering and Computer Science. The event was live streamed through USC’s MESA (Math Engineering Science Achievement) YouTube Channel. This is Gifted STEM Magnet’s first public and major STEM competition.
