Who is Florence Nightingale?

Our school is named after Florence Nightingale, a British nurse who was born on May 12, 1820 in Florence, Italy. She was the founder of modern nursing and fought for the reform of medical hospitals and medical care. As a social reformer, she set the example of diligent and thoughtful hospital administration, commitment to patient care, and Florence Nightingale compassion.

Soldiers knew her as "The Lady with the Lamp" because she walked the halls of their hospital at night, keeping watch and care over them. Before she died in 1910 she received many honors for her contributions to society. In addition to being a celebrated social reformer, Florence Nightingale was a statistician and a prodigious, versatile writer. She also opened the Nightingale School for Nurses, the first official nurses training program.
